I was going to do something similar, but in the end I decided to just spring for the pm drive/feed unit, it works well and was an easy install.I built my own, using an automotive window motor. I took the oportunity to install ball bearings at each end of the lead screw, it seemed to reduce the drag on the motor.
I've spent quite a bit of time modding my mill and it's well past time to start using it for what I bought it for...........cutting woodruff key ways and cross drilling roll pin holes in new shafts for my rokon 3 speed plunger gear box.
I was surprised that there was no bearing between the lead screw and the table, not even a bushing on mine. I guess it'll be ok if I keep it lubricated, but any metal shavings that get in there will eventually cause wear, so a bearing or bushing is probably in my future as well
