Question about order of ops for lathe work

Whoa, I like it. If I didn't have a zillion other things to do, well, it's not like this missing handle is important, it's been missing since I bought the lathe in December 2018.
Good idea, I will have to look up soft jaws and how that all works.
Can you buy them for 2 piece jaws?
I think you can buy them depending on the chuck. That said, they are trivially easy to make on a mill.

If you REALLY want to have fun, you should build yourself a taper attachment and just use that :)

By soft jaw/collet I meant to just put a piece of aluminum around 1"od into the chuck, drill a bit undersize, then bore to match the taper. Make sure you taper the correct way to hold your handle in the correct orientation. Once that is done use a hacksaw to cut thru one side of the collet approx halfway between the jaws, put in your handle and the cut will allow the collet to squeeze down with the jaw pressure and hold the part. I do this all the time for odd shaped parts that have to be held in the lathe.

Oh, now I get it. Don’t I feel silly.

The only stupid question is the one that you already knew the answer to.

Erich,
I did as you suggested, I could not be happier with the end product.
Thank you for your guidance.
