I got this in a lot of industrial surplus. it's .250 diameter carbide. I believe it's for forcing a hole into hardened material.
I think the principal is that friction heats the immediate area sufficiently to allow the edges of the pyramid, four faceted 'cutter' to displace material creating a hole in the workpiece. If you think I'm off base, please comment.
I'm familiar with 'Hi-Roc' drills that have two straight flutes but I wonder if there is a proper name for this point grind?
My Google-Fu isn't strong enough to answer the question, so far.
