A nice early project is a spring loaded taping alignment tool. Nice lathe project for a tool you can use.

How about a brain teaser? Something that you can impress your friends with, thanks to your awesome machining skills.

Not sure if it has been listed but there is a brain teaser where a shaft is turned into two tapered ends about 3" long with the points at the extreme ends and the middle diameter about 1.0-1 1/4 in the middle. When this piece is placed on 2 wooden straight edges ( I think about 3" apart with a slight rise to them the piece will roll up the incline.
