I'm surprised there's been no reference to the "Right Hand Rule".
Back, most of a lifetime ago, running a Bridgeport clone mill for my father's company, he made me demonstrate the right hand rule over and over, so many times that even now, I instinctively pause and check with my right hand before turning a handle.
That said, when get around to installing my home-brew x-axis power feed, I plan to use a momentary contact switch and have the lever tilt in the direction of the table travel.
