POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Are there down sides of a self centering VS fixed jaw when just doing one time operations clamping parts?
With my fixed jaw vise, I can mount the vise, tram it in square and until I move the vise I have a single reference face that does not change with the size of the part being clamped.

New handle for the pulleys on my lathe. The handle was missing when I got the lathe and as you can see, the pivoting part the handle screws in to is also broken. That’s the next think to remake.

Worm gear assembly like everything else in the apron was covered in a slurry of ground up metal and old oil when removed.

Even after multiple ultrasonic washings and WD-40 treatments I noticed the oil line was still plugged when getting ready to put things back together. Q-tips, more WD and some air got it cleaned out.

Worlds most expensive Clausing worm bushing. $15 in material and $2000 in equipment to make it.

All back together. Perfect fit although I had to inset it a couple thousands to make up for wear on the end of the housing.

A while ago I found a video from Mr Pete about making a speed nut for the Bridgeport. I thought it looked like a fun project, so I made one.

The knurl went off when the part pulled out of the collet a little. It was holding the smaller diameter, seems like that was a bad idea. Next time, knurl THEN cut off. I honestly forgot I wanted to knurl it.

I suspect that the indexing error was caused by me missing a hole or not locking for the cut. Either way, my own fault. I guess it's a half thou or so off. I don't expect it to be that accurate anyway, so I'll just deal with it. "character". :)

I do like the paint stick though. The marks are nice and easy to see. One of the many good things people here have convinced me to spend money on.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the result. I also have the threaded piece and spring done and it moves over a 1/2-20 threaded rod nicely while holding well when released.

Now I have to take the mill apart to install it. That might happen soon, maybe.... Lol.

Addition to last year's project.

We have a pneumatic pruner we picked up from the thrift store, which works well but requires air, we have a 300 ft air hose on a spool, but what a pain.

So we picked up a 12 volt compressor, mounted to a cart for mobility, added a vrla battery, and it works well, but the hose was a pain.

Found a hose reel in a junk pile, cleaned it up and got it working, needed to add a keeper, used some other scrap to build a mount, and now the hose is solved.
