PM-728-VT Install: Chip Tray or No Chip Tray?

My 728 should be arriving next week. I didn't order the stand and plan to put it on my 32" tall bench instead. I'm trying to decide if I need to install the chip tray between the bench and the mill. It seems to me like the chip tray is too small to catch most of the chips and would make it harder to clean up the benchtop, so I'm inclined not to install it. Am I missing something?

I think Chip Trey is a misnomer, it should be called an oil catch trey because that is where my oil drains to. I would install it with seals around the bolt holes and if it doesn't have a drain I might be inclined to install one of those also. Just my thoughts...

i'm with verboten, you will have an oily mess on the bench otherwise, with a tray you have more time to get to a spill. and remember to seal the bolt holes or you will still have a mess.

I've got the gasket material and the punches ready to go. Now I just need a mill, which is currently somewhere between South Holland, IL and Seattle, WA moving at ~60mph.

If you are drilling holes in the pan to bolt it in between the stand/table and the base of the mill silicone will work.

Another option is to dimple die the holes in pan so the edge is turned up. Also seal them. If and when the seal fails it will not likely leak.

I agree with the others. Use the tray to catch the oil. It's amazing how much oil leaks out of the pump system on these things.
