Phase 2 QCTP adjustments/modifications

The easy way is to remove the entire post then unscrew the handle until the tapered gibs fall out the keep trying in different positions. It's a multi start screw barrel so different arrangements are to be found. Mine also came clocked wrong and I did this procedure and got it exactly right and the I returned the toolpost because it was garbage and bought a dorian.

That is exactly how I fixed my post.

Thanks Ianagos and sawlog as well as the others, I played with it again for awhile this morning and found the trick to be watching where the 2 wedges engage the threads of the lock piece. It is more or less to the right when loose and forward when tight. Going to get this lathe dirty soon. Ski

I drilled and tapped for a new handle position 45 degrees either way of the original handle location. I really only needed one of the holes because I haven't moved it since but who knows what setups I'll be trying in the future. I don't have a mill but my Chinese drill press worked just fine.

I put a thick (~1/8") steel washer under the hold down nut and then gradually thinned it until the handle was at the desirable 4:30 clock position with the tool post dovetails facing 9:00 and 12:00 and all locked down. Sometimes different tool holders give different results so try the ones you have. Multiple spacer washers/shims are a possibility to accommodate tool holders that fit differently. You do not need to drill for a new handle position...

I have found a great disparity in the different brands of tool blocks as to how the handle clocks. I have a Aloris toolpost and have Aloris, PhaseII, and Armstrong tool holders. The handle clocks differently with every different brand. There are differences in the dovetail depth amongst the brands. If you drill new holes you may still be off if you switch brands of holders. I like the idea Ianagos posted.

My post is a piston type. There is no up or down motion. The handle just rotates an eccentric shaft that pushes the piston out as the high lobe hits it. Washers won't do anything.
