Parting Off Help --

Or cheat. Use a bandsaw to cut slices after you have already faced one side. Then face the surface you just cut on the saw on the lathe. You will usually lose less metal bandsawing them 20 thousandths over on length and then facing away that 20 thousandths, than using a parting tool that is 3/32nd inch wide. And you will typically get a nicer face finish too.

I recently had to do this when I needed to preserve my parting tool because I believed it was going to be used to "shape" a keyway.

Where is your cross slide in its travel. You want it so the the cutting tool is near the center of the feed screw. If it is hanging way out to the right it can cause twisting under load.

Since you are practicing and taking small cuts off the end of the bar it could be that the outer edge is bending from the chip load and no longer helping to guide the cutting blade.

Pictures are always worth a 1000 words. Some times we can spot a problem that no one thought to ask.
