Parting/cutting a hardened shaft

I'm diggin' that Dremel mount there, Kevin! Good idea. When/if I get my lathe I'm going to do that.

Ditto on the Dremel mount. I'm going to have to make one of those myself.

Glad to hear you got through those things but man, 45 min. each? Ouch.

I would suggest this style of blade next time.

The diamond cutting wheel, forth one down. I bought one to try and I am still using it. Cuts hard bolts, sheet metal slotting, used it Monday to cut a 45mm square hole for a temperature control in 20gage SS.

Using it as you were in the lathe, slow feed with the rod turning in the opposite to the Dremel would work the best. Keep the rpm up and slow feed.

And it does not evaporate like the regular disc does!

The Dremel mount I wish I could take credit for. It's from Alisam Engineering. They have a website at http://alisam.com/. Several different mount sizes/styles. Wouldn't be too hard to make one though.
Pierre I saw that diamond blade, but on the package it did not mention metals, only only marble and other hard materials similiar. With a $20 pricetag where I was shopping I didn't want to risk it, but if it's worked for you maybe next time i'll try one. Thanks!

A BIG problem is you are trying to do VERY heavy duty work on a minimal size and rigidity lathe. You should not be trying to machine this material on that small a lathe. Possible you might damage the lathe.

Kevin,

If you try the parting tool again, make sure to support the end of the shaft with a center or it will ruin your day. Don't part it all the way off though because that will ruin your day as well; stop short, remove the part and finish with a saw. You'll also need to widen the slot to at least the width of the parting tool.

Thanks for the advise on stopping short. I am not going to use the parting tool on this part, but great advise for the next piece.

Trying to be sure of your advise. This is a 2" dia x 4" long piece. It is in a 7 x 12 lathe. I know they aren't too great for strength. Do you mean very heavy work because of the type of material I am using and the parting or just because of the lathe I am using. I appreciate your input here. Thanks!
