It is difficult to get in the TS straight or flat. Once that MT grips just a little it is hard to move.

A small level will help align the offset tool before tapping the MT taper tight. Same idea but different tool in photo below:

Once the MT taper is set it will not move. There is very little torque involved.

No need to check the level of the lathe. To fine tune just put a DTI on the cross slide and sweep across the top of the taper attachment.
 
I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get my hands on a genuine taper attachment for my Hercus/Southbend. 20180727_115514.jpg
