When I look around the Web I see recommendations of 30-32" but that's about the height of my workbench and I find it too low for working on HSS cutters and such.

John--it all depends on your height and should be made to feel comfortable to you--You can also think about sitting in a chair to do your grinding so it could be at a comfortable height for your chair--as I get older--I am a little more steady sitting at the grinder with plenty of light---Dave

John--I was just thinking that making the stand adjustable for height would solve how you use it comfortably--for sitting or standing

John,
Make it a comfortable height for yourself for the main use of the grinder. Recommended bench heights are more of a guideline to suit the average population, doing the average thing. For drills and tools you might want a wheel that is closer to your eyes and for heavier stuff or wire wheel and buffing something a bit lower down.
Not to sure about an adjustable height. Grinders like to vibrate. Might be difficult getting a solid locking mechanism that didnt loosen during use, or solid enough that it didnt introduce harmonics into the equation.

Cheers Phil

Factory made pedestals like Baldor & Rockwell for example set the center height of the wheel (or arbor) at 39"

That would put it about at my elbow. With my poor eyesight I'd be leaning over a lot (though not as much as I do now with the grinder on the bench). I think I can make it adjustable by at least a few inches, though. Gives me a starting point. Thanks.

my solution, a $50 import drill press from craigslist. makes a sturdy adjustable cheap grinder stand.

love it! the light on the angle iron c clamped to the post sold me though!
I have a boaldor stand, and i shimmed it with a few 2x4s to get to the height i like. ZI think bench mounts limits how you can use the grinder, what you can do size wise, and take up that all important bench space!

I have mine sitting on top of a Craftsmen roll away tool box. Which sets the center of the wheel height at right around 48". I like it there, because I can really see what I'm doing and I don't have to lean over to get a good look at it. It's also very comfortable position for my arms. Not awkward in the least. I'm about 5' 10" tall.

Great idea !!! The only "improvement" I might suggest is a $15 LED gooseneck lamp from IKEA -- they call it "Jansjo" or something like that -- comes with a clamp base, or you can get one with a solid base that's cheaper, and mount the light column on a magnetic indicator base.

I bought a couple of these for bed lamps and they are seriously bright.
