Upgrading is so much easier than buying a first lathe because even if it is lacking at least you have a lathe to play with.

Those ways are tired! I bought a basket case lathe with better ways than that for much less money. Pretty much everything else was shot, but I still was able to have a lot of fun and make a lot of good parts. The great thing was that the seller was very honest, and disclosed everything. He even told me that although the drum switch seemed to work fine, if you opened it, some of the contacts were hanging on by a thread and the switch would fail soon. I do appreciate honesty in a seller, even though he tried to sell me the chuck for a lot extra.
