Omg I've become an Apple fan-man!

I'm way too old to be a boy.

Ok, not really a fan-man. But I went berserk and bought 2 used iPads this past week. A Mini 5th gen, and a 12.9" Pro 1st gen. I know people are snickering at the 2nd unit, but it was cheap and a chance to see if I like em or not. It is in absolute pristine condition, but it may have battery issues (it's 9 years old, it's a given, but I meant real bad battery issues), so it may be going back. But, and the way I see it, as I was in the market for a big tablet, nothing out there (by recognized companies) beats the big Pro/Air models by anything worth mentioning. Samsung has the S9/S10 Ultras, which on paper are nearly 2" larger diagonally. But comparing them at Best Buy shows there isn't a significant difference in size. The way I see it anyway.

The Lenovo P12 is highly gorgeous, and way cheaper then either the Ipad or Samsungs. I think it's a 12.7". But again a big iPad just seems to give you so much more. For now I'm sticking with Apple.

I invite all comments.

What about new world's to conquer?

I look forward to jail breaking the thing. And having my way with it.

I'm not likely to spend 700$+ on a new 13" ipad anytime soon. It seems a lot of these used beasts are in such great shape. If your needs are modest (but eyes ain't so good), for instance I paid 132$ total for this thing. The mini was half that. The Pro model may be all I'll ever need. It just seems there is so much more of an (actual) devoted community. Help is everywhere. Android, is there a community at all? I wager apps for these things are higher quality.

There is actually an android community. If you look for it.

As for Apple hardware, forget it. Apple software? different kettle of fish. I run MacOS, just not on a Mac.

I've owned one iPad, more than a couple of years ago. I thought iOS was a ghetto. Very much not meant for power users, which surprised me since Apple computers have a pretty large following among developers. Not at all for me, I sold it after a couple of months.

ipads are, as you found, a little "weak" in software/app term. MacOS on a PC or laptop, however, is a differrnt matter. Yes, MacOs is more powerful than windows in many respects and a lot of applications are geared more towards pro use .

Pervesely, MacOS runs better on NON-Apple hardware (Non iMac). Also you can swap the EFI files in the EFI partition which means you can swap hard drives from one non-apple machine to another (if you know how to do it) without losing one iota of data.

Dads had an IPad for a few years now. He still carries a flip phone, but he likes the IPad for sitting in the recliner, and takes to his tractor shows.

My daughter let me have hers once she was old enough to buy the one she really wanted. Lol. It’s pretty glitchy and tired. But I use it only for marketplace, and Netflix.

I’ve never bought an Android product, and got pretty frustrated trying to “intuit” my way through using a freebie just for YouTube stuff. Finally just turned it off and gave up.

I’m not a techy person at all. I appreciate it, insofar as I can use it. But if something goes wonky, I have zero curiosity to find a solution. I just do without.

When my previous laptop bit the dust (running Linux) I went searching for something with better mechanical quality. I had a run of machines with quality issues from one vendor. After a while, I ended up with a MacBookPro, which surprised me. I've had it a year now. It's light enough, compact and well made. I use Homebrew to add more Linux like features like open-scanner to support my old hardware.

I added OpenMP and OpenMPI so I can do CDoF simulations. That's software to support parallel processing. This is supported by FreeCAD. So I can do mechanical design, FEA and CFD on MacOS. That along with supporting Python, it serves my needs for computing. In my work life I wrote radar simulations using SciPy, Numpy and Python, so I have full access to the simulations and techniques I developed long ago.

That being said, I am surprised at the Apple app store search. It often brings up irrelevant stuff. I often have to search the Internet to find stuff, because the app seems to offer sponsored stuff rather than a good match to the search.

That, right there, is why I stick to business class & quality Lenovo Thinkpads (prior IBM).

I have a Witches Brew of PCs, MacBook Air, iPads going back a long long way...In fact I bought the second original Mac sold in Northern Colorado and had a Lisa before that. I learned to program for Quickdraw, the first non-modal OS I'd seen, and it blew me away. I am slowly weaning off Windows, with a couple of machines still running 7 (just fine) and two others at 10. I only use them for LabView and SolidWorks, most new stuff is on Mac.

I've played with creating apps, but I didn't get that far, don't think I ever will...maybe when I can tell an AI what to make. I just got an Audi PHEV with an app for remote control, and it's so bad it's like it was written by kids. So many missed features that could have been.

I've tried an Android phone and it's just greek to me. I am truly amazed at all my iPhone can do: sound meter, vibration analysis, accelerometer, magnetometer, and the camera gets used many times a day.

I used iPads and ForeFlight for aviation, but sold the Baron a few years ago and haven't turned the iPad on since. I will miss Word, PowerPoint and Excel, though the Mac versions are technically fine.

I think I'm slowly expiring in the digital world. :)
