I was watching a This Old Tony episode. He was talking about heat and surface grinding.
His go to wheel of choice is the Norton 5SG vitrified toolroom abrasive wheel.
I buy my wheels for around $25-$30.

5SG -Amazon Prime $98
5SG McMaster Carr $84

I read this description on Mcmaster Carr's site -
""5SG blue wheels are for heavy material removal. They are ceramic aluminum oxide, which lasts up to five times as long as Norton 32A General Purpose Grinding Wheels.""

Are they worth the price?
Are they of better balanced quality than standard wheels?
Thanks

I use them quite a bit and am pleasantly surprised at how well they hog out material.

I grind threads and find they hold form better and don't load up as much as conventional. True to form the grains are manufactured to break on certain stress lines keeping them sharp. If I was not concerned about cycle times I could creep feed 2mm+ deep with my various thread forms.

The rule of thumb some have told me is to keep 3 grains inside of the nose radius of my thread form with an 80 grit that's about .021" wide. With a ceramic and high bond strength I am able to do it with 1-2 grains and still hold form.

Key with ceramic is pushing it further when encountering burn or a loaded wheel make it act harder but forcing the ceramic to fracture instead of acting softer and losing whole grains to being too dull.

I think I got it right but I'm 3 years into grinding and still having to learn.

2mm, I had to convert it to inches.
.078" !! That's a huge bite

Well I think those prices are a bit high I think I’ve seen them for around $60

That's for sure . Creep or crush grinding is a little different from what we do Jeff .

Ok,
I just ordered one.
$88 MSC plus tax, plus shipping, $108.
I got to try it man!
The ceramic wheels are just more money.
I ask myself, why didn’t you just order the Amazon Prime for less?
I trust MSC. I don’t trust Amazon.

I’m really curious to hear how what you think about it.
Do you have different hubs for your wheel?
(I’m somewhat terrified to call Sopko to inquire about hubs)
Seems that Travers has new Sopko hubs for $132 CDN which seems surprisingly inexpensive.

Ah I see it’s a 1 1/4 wide wheel. I read it as a 1/4 wide wheel.

Why such a wide wheel? Is it for higher mrr?

Unless you have a big hp spindle I don’t see it being easy to use all that wheel.

I suspect that the bore is 1.25" and the wheel is probably 1/2" wide.
