Another thing to check on or watch out for if considering buying a used chuck is that the part of the jaw that mates to the scroll is not reversible (unlike most independant jaw chucks like most 4-jaw ones). So a 3-jaw chuck with solid or one-piece jaws always left the factory with two sets of three jaws. If the second set is missing, there is about zero chance of finding a set of jaws to replace the missing ones. You might luck out and find a set of jaws for the same make and model chuck but the odds are stacked against them not having excessive runout. Two piece jaws (the jaws will all have two socket head cap screws visible) are different. They come with a set of master jaws and a set of reversible outer jaws. So long as the master jaws are OK, you can buy a replacement set of outer or reversible jaws at most any machine tool supply store. All that you will need to know is the make and model of your chuck.
