I just realized that I should have said more about method; you do not need to level the lathe longways if there is no center leg, just need to level the ways crosswise at the head and tail ends, you should have a level long enough to span the lathe bedways, however the level may be supported by a precision parallel if it is too short. Usually the level can be placed directly on top of the vee ways if any burrs that may exist are removed by stoning. The level should be placed on the ways in the same orientation at each end of the bed, that is not reversed in direction, possibly giving a false reading. When you get the level to read the same at both ends, you are pretty clos to level/alignment and then take test cuts to determine final adjustments that may be needed.
