Here is what I have so far. I think I'm leaning towards panel-mounted connectors and a single resistor network. That will cover 90% of likely configurations. I will post "hacking" instructions for people who might want to use pull-up resistors, etc.
By default resistor network is located so it will be pulled down, but I added an extra hole for +5V, so one can flip it and end up with a pulled-up network. For one-of cases, the relevant pins can be clipped off and discrete resistors use to pull up the lines.
