Need help to fix a broken DTI

I have seen DTIs with the heads loose before. I've never before seen one come completely free and I'm surprised to see it on a DTI that seems to be in such good shape otherwise. The loose ones I've seen had endured much hard service (abuse?). I hope the threads in the body aren't stripped.

The DTI must have been a real pain to use for some time because I presume the screws took quite a while to come free.

As that appears to be a good DTI (unless a Chinese counterfeit) it’s worth saving

Long Island Indicator Service seems to have all the years of knowledge needed to do a good job.
They charge $140 for Intrepid (extra for replacement parts)

Might be worth at least contacting them for a quote.

I know their website has a ton of information… some of that may be helpful as well

Something to consider

The "crystal lift" tool is surprisingly inexpensive. The one made by Esslinger, the folks who created the video, costs $17.95. It can handle crystals that are 12 to 37mm in diameter.

As an alternative to buying a (very) rarely-used tool you could take the DTI to a local watch repair shop and pay them to remove the crystal. Considering how cheap the tool is they probably wouldn't charge very much.

The "crystal lift" tool won't work on the OP's DTI. That tool requires the crystal to have at least some cylindrical portion to grip. The pictured DTI crystal has zero protruding cylindrical feature. As a matter of fact, on the one that is next to me right now, the bezel is slightly (<.010") proud of the adjacent top surface of the crystal.
