My volt ohm amp meter is a POS. It was not working today when I needed one. GRR

OK I see prices from $50 to $1200. Most of my work is with 12 and 24 volt on boats, cars, CNC mills, general machine work. Plus quite a bit of testing for voltage present on 110VAC and 220 VAC.

What's a good choice for a new multi meter? Try not to break the bank, but stay away from el cheapo.

Since Fluke got bought by Danaher, they're still good meters, but pricey.
Aneng AN8009 (sold under multiple names but the same insides) gets
good reviews. You'll want a probe set (every safe-at-high-voltage socket
can be different nowadays) that fits it, maybe getting 'em together is wise.

Cheapest-available-at-HF isn't worth the trouble.

Fluke, still the best bang for the buck. Durable, which seems appropriate for your stated purposes and reliable. I have a couple, the oldest one is probably 35 years old now and both still work fine.

I have a Fluke 77 Series 2 that I bought when I was working telecom in the US in 1999-2001. Last week I replaced the battery for the first time.
Darn fine piece of kit.
