FYI - I put a tenths indicator on a mag base and zeroed it against the side of the collet chuck and set the DRO to zero. Moving it up and down a few times and reading the indicator when the DRO gets back to zero I am a hair over 0.002" off which is likely good enough for my purposes. There are many places where the error is coming from:
- Orthogonality and parallelism of the column/spindle
- Misalignment of my sensor carrier to the column
- Orifice size in my sensor case
- Resistance levels to light up that 5th light - perhaps I have it too low
- Me
A half a millimeter on any of these costs me a thou, so as others above have indicated this method will never get perfect accuracy but it should do fine for non-critical things.
