Hello Parshal:

I used a gantry crane for both our mill and our lathe. Our gantry crane is a monster 5 ton capacity unit bought off craigslist, thus much bigger than we need but I really like the portability it provides. However, you need pretty tall ceilings to use them effectively. Your idea of installing an I beam is a good one.

In my shop, I can lift just about everything I need to with this modified engine hoist crane. Maybe something like this or a variation thereof may work for you.

Talked to the contractor. We're going to add an ibeam to the ceiling (built to support one ton) and I'll add an ibeam trolley.

Is this being added to the current construction or an addition. Will it be supporting the ceiling?

I was just thinking that if it is included in the weight distribution of the ceiling, you will loose part of your 1 ton capacity. I dont know what that is, but your architect could probably tell you that. Might be something to think about and upgrade that beam a little. Just thinking out loud.
