[Newbie] Motor and Pully needed for Craftsman 109-21270 Lathe

What kinds of problems are you having? Does it depend on what material you are turning, or is it bad for everything. Is there anything loose?

the 109's appear to be loved or hated, dependent on what the operator feels.
i would say that they are cool little machines for small turning operations
as i said in the previous post, the spindle runs fast with a 1740 RPM motor- an 1140 rpm motor would make a more useable powerplant
the spindles are small in diameter, a crash would not be a good thing
there are parts available
if the lil machine is not hurt too bad and you think it's worth the time to recondition, then do it!
you can only learn something from the process

Thanks again for the advice, I just ordered an 1140 rpm 1/4hp motor. My machine looks to be original and complete with six extra gears (metric threading?) and both 3 and 4 jaw chucks. Without disassembling, the spindle bushing appears tight, but there is lot of backlash in the reduction gears. Hopefully I can find bushing stock if some need replacing. There is a good video on YouTube by "Hand Tool Rescue" where he disassembles and rebuilds a Craftsman 109. I also found a copy of the 109 manual. Should keep me busy for a while.

The 109 has a thin spindle and bends easily from what I have heard
The later 6" Atlas/Craftsman lathes were more stout, spindle-wise
