"CNC machinists operate computer numerical control machines. For the uninitiated, this is a machine that operates a lathe or a mill. On the upside, it renders obsolete processes that used to be performed by hand, at a slow pace and with high risk to the operator’s life and limb.

Now that the CNC operator has had most of the physical hazards of manufacturing replaced by a machine, there’s not a lot to do but push buttons and perform equipment inspections to make sure the coolant is at a safe level. Since it’s a specialized skill, the job offers no room for advancement, which caused respondents to report a high degree of dissatisfaction."

This is a good one, as any late model kid will disagree with me, I feel this is exactly why this country went down the
tolet and speaking of tolets these are the guys who will reap. And this didnt just start, it started when I went to
school, back then parents called that dumb bell school, they didnt want their kids to go what they went through like
during the early 1930s. I had really wanted shop in school, no, had to learn about Nepoleon and that guy never paid
my bills. Now the big thing is jobs people beleive its all up to the president whoever he or she maybe, so whats the
president do, buy all the burnt factorys and make what? Why cant we just elect a farmer. Look at these wantabees
rich kids who never played with toys, $100 says they cant even start a lawnmower, or why should they. Whatch TV
study them with all that money why would they want to become president its just a game they cant do nothing,
They couldnt get out of a locked bath room. Back to the subject all though there are jobs maybe $3000 a week but
500 ft up on a tower_ no way_ programing cncs_ no way I dont even know about texing I still got rotory phone. I consider
my self modern I even have a quick change gear box. Whats that song in the year 3535 some machines doing it for
me. was'nt that song writer on target. So push a button machine does it, Even I can push a button and whatch
it on U tooob.

You can always do it by hand at home. Does that mean that if I convert my hobby mill to CNC, it's a self-inflicted injury? :lmao:

People are dissatisfied because they quit progressing in thier field and stop learning. I have very little respect for those that want a better job, yet keep punching that clock expecting someone to give them a raise. Why should an employer give you more money for doing the same thing in a year? The responsibility is on the employee to show that they are a valuable commodity and worth more each year.
hehe and why on the other hand should i give my employer more when i know he is not going to give me more, its a two edge sword, ive been on both sides of the fence and know exactly what your saying, kids today have seemed to have lost the drive we had back in our days, but companies are screwing their workers more now adays too,

Maybe some of you haven't heard how companies USED to treat their employees many years ago. My old father in law in the 60's told me that in the North Carolina furniture factories, the men would be handed their pay on the way out the door each day. Just enough pay to stop and buy a day's food.

The management's theory was that if a person got enough pay to get any savings up,they would be able to quit and take the time to go and find a better job.

In this sort of treatment, unions did make things better for the working man. But,over time,I think unions got way out of hand, and helped ruin American industry. I mean, they got a guy who could only screw on a car fender more pay that I ever made, and priced us right out of the competitive World market.

i agree with you there, my daughter works for a company that worked her part time but yet she worked 67 hrs a week for over 9 months untill they got caught, i worked for a company that worked us 9 hrs aday and paid us for 8 and said you only take lunch if you have time which he made sure we didnt have time he said the hr went to the buisness, he got caught, i believe a honest days work for a honest days pay, when a business abuses the rights of the worker then their licences should be pulled, companies are looking for ways to save money to fill the owners pockets now days, not all but some, and they are doing this at the expense of the worker,Unions i'm not going to go their cause it causes to much grief, lol companies that go out of the country for cheap labor put a tariff on them so high they cant afford to ship back to usa. this is just my opinion dont want to make anyone mad:biggrin: mac

The main reason of operators getting dissatisfied is that the pay scale is STAGNANT.. Pay scales in the trade have not changed since the 70's and have actually gotten worse for the younger guys starting in the trade... Shop owners just arent willing to pay for skilled trades anymore, I find greed plays the biggest part of it..

Setting up a cnc takes far more time than setting up a manual lathe.. You dont stick a tool in a cnc lathe and take off cutting..

If you have a good cnc programmer/operator you have a guy that will make a shop owner much more money in any given time frame.. I'm talking of a guy you can hand a print, tell him you need 20 parts like the print, and point him to the stock rack and he can do it all unattended..

Speaking of a cnc production operator, they have no skill set and is a completely different job than a cnc programmer/operator..

The article and the way its written, seems like its by someone that is uneducated in skilled trades..

There is a big difference in cnc operator and programmer/operator.. even bigger difference between lathe operator/programmer and mill operator/programmer..

We call them "Putter-Takers" around here. They put in the material, they hit the green button, they take the part out.

I have to disagree with that article to a certain extent. In todays companies, it's all about making money. With Green Belt training, Black Belt training, and all of the other training sessions that we all have to go through, there is still an opportunity to get ahead. A lot of it is called initiative. If you get the mindset that it's Groundhog Day and it's going to be the same thing, day after day after day, then that job will eat away at you like a cancer. A lot of newbies going into the manufacturing world want big dollars just for standing there loading and unloading parts and pushing the button. I hear it from quite a few I work with. They'll scrap out an order, then blame it on someone else and say "it wasn't my job to check it". Yet they are the first ones to gripe when they don't get a raise. Granted, a lot of employers can be real dicks when it comes to raises, but there are still quite a few out there that rewards the employee for going over and above, coming up with cost saving ideas, coming up with shorter cycle times. I've seen guys ***** about how hard they have to work all week, but every time you see them, they are standing in a aisleway talking, waiting on the machine to cycle through, or slow down cycle times so they will have work on the weekends to get 1 1/2x or 2x pay.

I once worked for a guy who screamed at us from the moment he walked into work in the morning, till the moment he left at night. He cursed us out constantly, told us we were f-ups, and one day, fired the entire office and told us to "get the f out." I remember how we all waited in the hallway outside the office door waiting for him to change his mind. After almost 6 months of this, not knowing whether I would have a job or not, I finally quit without a job. I was out of work for 2 months, and went through a major depression worrying how I would get my mortgage paid.

Finally, out of sheer desperation, after 2 months, I took a job that really sucked. I worked my ass off for crap pay on cases that had been badly screwed up by my predecessors. I was under so much stress that I ground my teeth down at night, and needed 2 root canals that I had to pay for because there was a crap dental plan that covered very little. My secretary was a drunk who had lost her husband, and I felt sorry for her and let her slide when she would come in at noon. The boss would ask how she was doing, and I lied and said great so he wouldn't fire her, but he did anyway. I finally got the sack myself one day when they found out I was looking for another job. By 11am, I was on the pavement looking for another job.

You think lawyers suck when you have to deal with them? Try being one and working in an office with them.
