Mosin Rehab Project 2015

When I left it yesterday the bolt wouldn't close at all and I knew I had to skim a few thousandths off the face of the barrel. Since this is only my second solo bolt gun build it's still a little intimidating to get the head space just right and have gotten the extractor cut properly timed at final torque. In the end I took about .006" off the barrel face and hand reamed the chamber accordingly. It all worked out in the end and I put the action back together and function tested it.

After that I waxed up the steel parts, mixed up some JB weld for bedding compound and bedded the barrel channel. I just need to get a finish on the parts and start thinking about a color for the stock.

Aside from not knowing anything about gunsmithing, I don't think I could do that without a lot of rework. That is good!
 
Just reassembled. The exposed aluminum was polished but flatted out after I shot the satin clear over it. The paint is Duracoat "Russian Light Green". Steel parts are parkerized.

I'm going to try to get to the range tomorrow to start breaking the new barrel in.
 
Sorry, no. I'm still considering where I want to go with the design. I have a few ideas for changes I'd like to make on my next one, providing I can find another donor action.
 
I've been working on and off for the last week on a rear monopod. At the range I remove the front bipod and use an adjustable rest that sits considerably higher. Normally I use a rear bag but this rifle sits up a little higher than my bag so I've had to stack the bag on something else. The monopod is adjustable and rotates from folded to 45 degrees to 90 degrees.
Making it adjustable meant I had to make a couple of "educated nuts" or "smart nuts" like what you buy for your bridgeport spindle depth control.

The nuts themselves are simple enough, press the button to disengage the thread, release the button and an internal spring pushed it back into the threads.

Like the "educated nuts" curious on your process....
Did you drill and tap, then mill away the unthreaded portion?

I'm looking to do something similar with about an 8 Tpi acme thread for a sight in vise.
