Went over to an antique mall that has a parking lot sale the first Saturday of every month. Pretty much if you want machinists tools you have Harbor Freight or the antique stores around here. In one of the display cases I found a Moore and Wright 0-3" depth micrometer set. The box has been around someones shop. But the micrometer and rods are in good shape. It has 2 0-1" rods, one has a narrow tip to get into small holes. Each rod can be adjusted by two nuts on the end of the rod. There is also a strap that came in the kit but I don't know if that is original. I paid $37.60 with taxes for the set. I don't think that is a bad price. They also have a Moore and Wright 1-2" micrometer for $29. It is in good shape as well and I may go and pick that up as well.

We had a metalwork trip from school in the sixties, we went to Park Gate steelworks in Rotheram, watched them tap a blast furnace, had a peep down the tuyere, then open hearth conversion of iron into steel, then on to the rolling mill and watched steel rolling in progress. We spent the last few hours at Moore and Wrights in Sheffield watching them make all manner of measuring equipment. Moore and Wright are still going under their own name, although part of Bowers Metrology. All the steelworks are long gone. Happy days!

Great find. I have been picking up Moore and Wright items when i can find them...Bob

Most of my measuring equipment is Moore & Wright and a few other bits too, many of them are quite old one of my 0"-1" mics having been given to me was bought in the 1950s an dstill going strong. We used to have a gauge room at my place of work that if still there I would take it to along with my other mics to be checked, but it isn't so I have to use the setting standards that are supplied with a micrometer when new. I was recently given a set of inspection grade gauge or slip blocks that I use to double check them.

Moore & Wright are in my opinion THE QUALITY measuring tools in the UK. I have a 0"-6" M&W depth mic and lots of other bits and bobs made by them and am very pleased with them all. There are a few other names from the same stable that you would recognise also, just one of them being James Neil (spelling)

Just my thoughts on it :thinking:

Joe, not to raid your secret stash, but since we're in the same town... Where's the parking lotsale held? I'd like to check it out one weekend. Thanks!

Kinda forgot I posted this. Thanks for all the replies, a couple days after I picked up the depth micrometer I went back for the 1-2" micrometer. Really nice quality on the tool.

Actually it will be this coming weekend. Gannons Antiques on US41 south of 6 Mile Cypress just north of the Pizza Hut. If you hit Alico road you need to turn around. If you go into the main store and take a right on the back wall in a display case is a set of Brown and Sharpe 1-2" and 2-3" micrometers, they want $30 for both. Good luck.
