SM Monarch. Id

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the Rockaway Recycling link; that's exactly what I was looking for.

Unfortunately, I don't know very much about Monarch lathes, apart from the 10EE. I have a friend with a 16C (13x30, can swing 15.5") and it's a beast. It's the toolroom version of the lathe, with taper attachment. It's very well make in all respects; it looks like it was carved out of solid granite.

The first eBay machine (http://www.ebay.com/itm/331376307261) is a 16x30 (18.5" swing) and looks like the toolroom version to me as well, but I don't really know. It has a 1000 RPM top spindle speed and a taper attachment, just like my friend's 16C. That would be my choice and I would love to have that machine.

The second eBay machine (http://www.ebay.com/itm/331376329601) is an 18BB, 18x120 (20.5" swing). It probably has a 10-15HP motor; I wouldn't ever consider it unless you have 3-phase power. If you're look for a big machine, this is it. It was built just prior to WWII and has probably got a lot of use on it (wouldn't you love to know all the things that old girl has done?). By 1943, when my 10EE was built, Monarch was turning out so many lathes that quality was slipping a bit; I don't know about early 1941, but things were probably a lot better then. I looked at a similar Monarch, about 240" between centers and it was amazing in every regard! Put "Monarch 18BB" into Google and you'll find some similar machines.

I've reached out to several guys that know these bigger machines and I'll report back.

Are you close enough to be able to go see the machines?

Cal
