Monarch 20.5" swing engine lathe for sale for $500?!?!? A scamm you think??

Depending on the age, the motor they were fitted with is either 5, or 7 hp. I'd bet the 20.5 is the is the diameter but usually can turn something bigger then that.

there are usually a plate on the lathe that gives the swing, when it was made and serial number.

$500 is a steal if it works and the ways are in good shape.
 
Might be worth getting over there to have a look at the machine. It may be a good deal for you.
It might swing 20.5 but the advertised swing could be less. My 14X30 Sidney is supposed to swing 14
inches, but will swing 171/4. The weight he gives make me wonder as well. At a approx. 5000 pds, it could
be a smaller machine, and he is giving you max swing. The ad says single phase power, so that could be a good thing to you. As Tony mentioned, those big boys usually don't turn very high RPM, but not the end of the world unless you work on very small bits.
