Well I tried to plug the hole but I had trouble getting the new hole to tap straight. So I cleaned off the powder coating, determined it was cast iron and brazed the hole full. I then milled the top flat, centered the hole across the clamp fingers and used a drill chuck in the mill to hold the tap and I was able to accurately tap the hole. All is good now.
I did find the "Certificate of Conformance" in the bottom of the case. I wonder what Chief Inspector Tano is doing these days.....
