Mini lathe chuck change out

I went thru this a few years ago and was a little frustrated by all the vague descriptions and product codes. Measuring the spindle and buying from a vendor showing complete specs was the reassurance I needed.

For example, THIS listing on Amazon shows three different size choices – 80mm, 100mm and 125mm. Only the 80mm has the 55mm spindle recess to match my Harbor Freight 7x12. I wanted something bigger, so I knew I'd need a chuck and a 55mm adaptor plate.

As @DavidR8 (R8 the taper or R8 the Audi...?) mentioned above, LMS can definitely get you squared away. They've got a great info page too. But there are plenty of ebay sellers with the same chuck and adaptor plate. Just takes more time and of calipers to be sure you're buying the right stuff.

What's the make/model of your lathe? Is it not listed at LMS??

btw what about the er chuck do you like, i'm a noob but seems very limiting.

thanks Huub, i will digest all of this but at first blush it does not cover my chuck, but who knows i may have missed it
Maybe your chuck is vendor specific like the one for my mini lathe. You have to measure your spindle dimensions any way to be sure that a new chuck will fit.

I will say this
Measure your lathe spindle , bolt hole spacing , register size
Then measure mounting specs on the chuck.
Might help to provide MM specs
Then call LMS. Even better if you can call them while standing in front of the machine.
It might be easier than going through the web sight….I find it frustrating
Or just take the opportunity to get the lathe time and experience
O have about 30 Hours total on my used lathe and finally broke down and made a plate for my Smithy to use the Bison 4 jaw chuck I have been looking at on the shelf for a year!
I started with a aluminum plate as it was the only material I had on hand and a good test run for me.
