Metal Remnants

Anybody using midwest metal supply? I found they specifically sell remnants by the box.

Keith--having inexpensive metal supplies on hand to help in projects is very helpful---a lot of us scroungers on here know where to look and help each other find free or cheap sources----one question is do you have plenty of storage room?---if you can let us know what material you would like we can guide you----look at the thread ---ideas for scroungers--and you can gain a lot of ideas as you read through all the posts---I am constantly finding free resources and I would be lost without my huge metal and materials supply I have----having an inexpensive supply is definitely helpful in designing projects you can afford and you don't have to wait on materials---Dave

I do have a good bit of storage room and am working on more. I am going to start looking at the local scrap yards, I guess I didn't figure on them having much. Right now I am looking for some 1/2 thick by 1.5 wide min size pieces about 6 inches long and a couple pieces of 2 inch round for a mount I am wanting to make. Trying to make an adapter to go from a picatinny rail to a 1/5 diameter vertical tube. Beyond that I am hunting some stuff to run different ball mills against to see what the cuts will look like and have on hand to pick out the proper cutter for the job I am working on.
I had found the place called Midwest Steel supply that sells drops for what seemed to be a reasonable price but I wasn't sure what I could expect and was hoping someone would have already dealt with them and said they were ok,, or that they bought 20 lb of what amounted to shavings and pieces that were not useful at all.

Gonna hit a couple dealers this week and see what I come up with.

Online Metals has a place in Seattle, just a few minutes from me. They had shelves set up in the front with drops, and sold them by weight.

When I went in there last week, the drop shelves were gone. Orders from On High, they told me.

Bummer, says I.

The do sell "sample packs" of 3 foot lengths of stock, and "protoboxes" in 5, 10, and 20 pound lots, but they are preboxed assortments of rems.

What are you guys paying for your aluminum pieces from the scrap yard you go to. I just bought some and they charged me $1.00 a pound. Seeing the metal supply store 35 miles away charges around $3.00 a pound, I was pretty happy. bought 36 pounds

That sounds pretty good. Online Metals no longer has a drops pile, but you can buy a 20# box of aluminum cutoffs (their selection) for $40.

(They explained to me that the bums were coming in and filling their buckets to take to the scrappers, so they quit making them available.)
