Memories of 9/11/01

The news coverage and the impact on us here in Canada, was similar to the impact of the JFK assassination.

Thank you for telling your personal stories, as the media concentrated on the spectacular (I use that term advisedly) elements, and far less on the human side.

Thank you. I did not know any of them. On one hand I wish I had known the folks in New York but on the other hand I'm glad I didn't and have to grieve even more for colleagues that I knew well.
It is probably better that way, that day was hard enough. I can’t imagine what the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald went through loosing over 600 employees that day, and he went to every funeral he could make. Every year on the anniversary of the attack, he hosts a fundraiser to raise money to help the families of his employees that were lost. I’ve heard stories over the years about kids of victims of the attack going to work for him when they grew up because of how well he treated the families.

The same happened with Aon. We have a scholarship fund for the dependents and many have come to work for Aon over the ensuing years.

Thanks all for sharing your heartfelt stories so far, It helps a lot to hear these experiences.
Just would like to share, as you said, it was a beautiful morning. I had a company work van and made my way to the city with my helper and my wife from Staten Island to lower Manhattan where on Broadway and Liberty I would drop her off and she would make her way to 40 Wall where she worked. I continued to West 31st and 7th ave to an elevator mod. job I was on with another team. The super of the building ran up the stairs to tell us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. The Pan Am building blocked our view of lower Manhattan. Not knowing at that time it was an attack we kept working. Next thing I know the super comes back up with a small TV and shows us that another plane hit the other tower. Now we knew we were under attack I looked over to the Empire State Building and saw the workers on the roof scrambling to get off the roof as a U.S. fighter jet flew over New York. The guys I were with knew I worked at the Towers when the job started and asked if the buildings would come down to I answered NEVER. Unfortunatly I was very wrong. Once on the street I asked if anyone was going to Staten Island and wanted a ride. I had 14 people with me as we started our making our way. My son was able to get in touch with my wife on the work phone from the job he was on, and then with another friend who was working at a Marriat hotel in Brooklyn and had my wife make her way to him via the Brooklyn Bridge and he took her back home. Most of the young people today around 10 or so at that time now 25/30 yrs old don't understand that day has changed the world as we knew it. I remember thinking to myself at the time what the world would be like in 2001. The effects that day changed the course of our country for ever. I lost many friends, as many others did, not to mention firemen and police. Don't forget that day, It can happen again. Thanks for your post and efforts Eddyde:
