measuring degrees of a circle

Yep.

If you are using a tape measure that rolls across the surface as you measure use this formula:

Distance = Angle x 3.14159 x Radius / 180
For your 5" wheel here are examples for 1 and 15 degree measurements:
Radius = 5/2 = 2.5

Distance = 1 x 3.14159 x 2.5 / 180 = 0.0436
Distance = 15 x 3.14159 x 2.5 / 180 = 0.6545

If you are using the points of a caliper to measure linear distance you would set the caliper to these values:

Distance = 2 x Radius x SIN Angle/2

Distance = 2 x 2.5 x SIN (1/2) = 0.0436
Distance = 2 x 2.5 x SIN (15/2) = 0.6526

ty Ray thats what i needed to know, is their a formula you used that i can copy for future refference.

If you don't have a flexible rule, you could draw it out on a piece of paper. The length of the paper is going to be the same as the circumference of the circle (pi*diameter). 5inch diameter is going to have a circumference of about 15.708". For spacing use the formula that Ray gave, except that instead of measuring between the increments, I would recommend measuring them all from your "0". Otherwise the error in your measurements will stack up, and things will wander. If you have access to a computer, you can use a spreadsheet to calculate all the distances, if not, you can calculate it by hand.

So, say you want 5 degree marks

Mark N will be N*5/360*diameter*pi or N*5/360*5*3.14159.

thank you mark and ray thats alot simpler than the way i was going to figure out lol. my son bought another 1967 ford truck with a 352 engine well the harmonic balancer has no timing marks other than top dead center so i'm going to mark his, we are putting a new electronic distributer in it with the dura spark ignition so i wanted everything marked so i can get it timed exact, i spent my weekend wiring the whole truck while dodgeing tornado's it missed our house by 7 houses thank god, but i had some neighbors that got nailed so i helped them tarp and board their houses, but you know to me every day is blessed that i can wake up and piddle and help others. god is great.:)) mac.

Draw what you need in cad or even power point.. Print it out, stick it on... Done. There is even a way to print it in mirror and transfer the ink to the metal...

hope that helps.

But at least it has SIN-us rhythm...

Ray,
The EKG image you chose to use shows a biphasic T wave.
I hope you pulled that off internet images and not out of your medical chart.
It's not necessarily a good finding.

hi guys, thanks for all the info, took it all and got my balancer marked and installed to day in truck. put ne electronic ignition in and timed and my son is hopping up and down and asked me how do you know all this and i replied friends willing to help and doing it when you have to you forget i have many years on you and when i was growing up if you couldnt figure it out you didnt have things you needed, so learn what you can from dad and anywhere else you can and remember your friends when they need something, the truck runs great, and i got to lay the first stripes in front of the house, hehe. thanks everyone for the info. mac:))
