Mc Dougall massive lathe

Nice old iron. I would grab it if you have room.

Can you see (and hear) it running?

A couple more things to consider are that the machine in all probability has relatively slow spindle speeds. Similar size machines of that era have maximum speeds in the 500 rpm range. Another thing is the fact that it's a gap bed machine. If the "gap" is available it would make the machine far more useful. As it sits it appears some where along the way someone has made an adaptor to extend the current chuck to reach over the missing gap piece. If you wanted to use any chucks other than the one currently on the machine, or the one on the floor you'd have to duplicate that extension.

If the price is right, you have the means to move it, and a place large enough with sufficient power I would go for it. Just keep in mind it's likely a 10 hp or larger 3 phase machine. It will be difficult to repower it with anything single phase or lesser hp that will have enough power to run the machine.

We don't know the money side of this, but figure out how you'll get it to where you want, and what that'll cost if you don't do it yourself. For something like that lathe, it could easily cost more than the lathe itself.
