Myself, I absoulutly hate valve jobs. Third one completed yesterday 1) 350, 1) 302 and last one 460.
Reason; mainly more time spent cleaning than machining. To be fair with costs it boils down to shop
heat, rags, cleaning solution even sweeping up. I cant imagine back when doing these things on
L heads for $15. Course a gal of gas was under .20 cents to clean, and filling the burner for 50 bucks.
So I charge 50 dollars a head. And all said and done my cheap calculator says just about $6.00 an hr
for me. They just dont understand seat stones wear, diamond stone dressers dont come cheap, then
getting rid of the trash, big problem. Oh Its my truck that goes to Napa for stem seals lap compound &
when the truck comes back its got no gas in it. Think I need another sign> dont bring it here unless its
a Model T or something, that could be fun. So you all must have a hated shop job beside sweeping

Working with ductile cast iron has to rank up there for me. Nasty crap to work with. Milling fiberglass isnt fun either

There is no particular job I dislike. But one thing I hate is doing several pieces of one thing.
Like over 6pcs of same thing and I would like to get another job.
That goes for manual machining of course. Because on cnc my job is not to change the stock.

When buying a used machine, I hate flushing the coolant system that hasn't been used in a long time.

Sweeping & taking out the trash

Im with CD on this one. I really need to stop and just spend a week or two cleaning and putting everything away again properly. But I'm a lazy slob, so it will just have to get in line behind all the other stuff I havent done lately...

When I served in the Navy as a MR, I worked in the machine shop aboard my tender, the USS Yosemite, AD-19. I seemed to always get stuck machining fiberglass. There was no vacuum to catch the spray and it all got on everything and anyone walking past the lathe. I figured my chief hated the div-off as his office door was on the other side the lathe.
