what i was going to do was mount a dial indicator to my compound now when i rotate my compound the dial indicator will read in 1000ths now i want to convert the 1000ths into degrees. if this makes since:thinking: macI can certainly help with any sort of math equation but, cannot quite picture in my mind your intention. If you can tell me how you intend to position the DI in relation to a fixed point, I can give a simple formula to make the conversion.
Offering another angle of attack, you might with to re-scribe the compound etchings, degrease them then, slop some paint in the lines. Let it set for a bit then wipe it off. If you do it right, the paint will remain in the lines.

i,m wanting to use the dial indicator as the compound base graduations , say if i rotate the compound and it reads 1 degree with the dial indicator in a fixed position maybe it would read 3000ths:thinking: macSo, instead of the normal graduations on the compound base (which are already in degrees) you want to mount a dial indicator in such a way to swing it while seeing movement on the indicator? Or is it using the compound, and dialing in to cut you want to read differently? I'm having a little trouble catching your meaning.

understand, i guess it would be kinda like tramming maybe, if it is to comlacated i may try and scribe new lines, but i will wait to see what you find out, ty much) macOK, I get what you're after but it's actually going to be a little tricky. The DI needs to be mounted to a fixed point and needs to indicate off some other point. You'll need some kind of a fixture. Complicating things is that most DIs have a limited range and due to the nature of the geometry involved, won't cover the full rotation of the compound. I'll noodle this a bit and will let you know.
I've done things similar to this with the mill but, it was a one-time deal and would be too cumbersome for regular use.
Let me scratch my head on it...
no i just want to read my degree's lol i probally making it a harder project than it needs to be, i will try the paint and a brass brush and see if i can clean it up better, but ty much)macYou'll need to establish a fixed, known distance from the pivot point of the compound mount, and use a dial indicator that is positioned tangent to the circular movement while moving the compound. The further you move it, the more error you will be introducing due to the loss of true tangent position. Seems to me you'd be better off re-marking the existing graduations, which could be paint filled. But maybe you are going for something else.
