Material choice for spare lathe belt

No ratchet. It must have gone another direction when it was shed from the load on the street. I just found the end with the hook on it. Fortunately, it was not chewed up too badly, and there was enough for a belt. The belt was spliced with contact cement and rayon cord. Seems to work, but it is a little thin and it slips a bit.
