Machining a rusty steel rod

The rust and scale are abrasive. Vacuum it up after your first pass. Better yet see if you can catch the chips with vacuum as they leave the tool.
 
Thanks, I'm kind of thinking I might just cut a chunk off and sand blasting it before I even put it on the lathe.
