Machinable Wax/Plastic

RCB,
Sorry for the delay, I just got back from dialysis (getting siphoned off). The article I read was on the 3-in-1 group site on the Yahoo groups pages. I will go there and find the link and post it up here. It was a fairly long thread that explained it very well and exactly how to formulate it and what to expect. Back in a bit!!

don't hurt yourself getting back to your computer
on my account.:)
can i use all clear part of milk bottle?
i like the cutting boards but i'm trying to do
a little better and end up with 'blocks'
i think the cutting boards are made with HDPE.
there are different density's.

RCB,
I think itis just the lids due to the composition of the plastic and the similarity of it's structure to the parafin. I remember several of the guys who made it commenting on the blue coloration of the finished product. One of the guys over there experimenting with it made a dry sump for a BMW engine so it can be made quite large. I think the limit would be the size of your heat unit and ability to contain it properly. I have never made it myself, but the individuals who have are well respected members over there and known for following safety and proper materials handling procedures. Sorry I cannot be of more help, but if you read the entire thread it discusses the correct base materials by chemical name and it's exact composition. Good luck and let us know when you make a batch.

maybe i should keep it simple and use balsa blocks.
let me think on it.

we've tried that. the gluing the sheets together
just doesn't work for me.

we used blocks of wood from local lumber mill, they usually give us what we needed, we usually trimmed the blocks in the vertical saw..

We had a few rather large projects, several refrigerator door molds, we used a couple pieces of foam board glued together. worked well enough and we got it now, not 3 days later in the mail..

if you plan on buying machinable wax, it isnt cheap, yes cheaper than steel, but not exactly cheap..

if you make your own try like 1 lb parafin wax and melt in 4oz polyethylene (I think empty milk jugs will work) per lb. of wax , use colored wax..

found this http://www.weaponeer.net/forum/uploads/dcorb/files/2009-02-23_174227_machinable_wax.pdf
and a blog where a guy made his own http://www.machinistblog.com/make-your-own-machinable-wax/

gee, that instamorph is pricey!
i think where there coming from is
more like for casting.
i think the instamorph can go on the thing
you want to make a mold off and then it's rigid.
when you put on latex rubber you have to support
the latex rubber somehow.

at this point just testing the software and the table.
making straight passes through the material.
do you know what temperature the plastic melts at?
the hobby stove goes up to 350 degrees.

what about using 1 gallon plus ice cream tubs?
the ones at walmart, country pride and blue bunny?
it seems like same plastic as caps only clear.
what happens to the color printing and stuck on
paper labels when they get melted down?

Have A Nice Day!
