This past weekend I finished assembling my 1943 Logan model 200 and started it up! It came here in pieces. My expectations were low so some growling and chatter from the headstock didn’t cause panic but I had to find out why. I decided to open up the headstock and make a list. I didn’t get very far. The main spindle has 2 Woodruff key half moon slots. One slot and key under the bull gear and the second under the spindle gear. Both keys are in a straight line.
The bull gear has a key slot and a plunger. Turn the bull gear so that plunger is at the top. Your bull gear key will be at the top also. By following disassembly instructions both keys are at TDC. ALL STOP.
If I rotate the spindle and place the plunger TDC! this should place the woodruff key at the spindle gear end of the shaft to TDC also. My spindle gear key slot is at 230 degrees as you face the chuck. It appears the bull gear has sheared the key. The gear and shaft found new homes. The really bad news is I can’t press the shaft out, yet. It must be a real mess in there.

I find the fun is in the challenge. Take your time and think it through. When I refurbished my Logan I had to make a special gear puller using threaded rod to remove and install the gears on the spindle. When you are really stumped, try contacting Scott Logan at http://lathe.com/. He is really helpful with knowledge as well as parts. Good luck, you'll have a really nice machine when you are finished. I love my Logan.

Also, you may have better luck at replies to the thread if you post in the Logan section of the forum.

Thanks Randy. This forum has so much to offer it might have taken a while before I found the Logan section. I’ll head there soon. This morning I’m heading to the garage. I talked to Scott when I came across the countershaft problems. The bushings wore out long ago and destroyed the shaft. I had to sores replacement parts at McMaster Carr.

WOW! You are making very good progress. Thanks for the update.

It is kinda difficult to be working a machine when you need that machine to make the repairs. I just ran in to that problem with my mill.

Here is a link to the Logan section.
