I don't want to think about turning a taper in sections. What did you turn 6' long through the spindle on a 7x10 out of curiousity?
Acme screw that came in 6ft lengths and no saw with a metal blade at the time. Mostly parting off to proper size and turning down ends for bearings. Worst part is controlling the outboard end from whipping.
Taper should be no problem as long as it is planned out. Blending with file and paper makes the transitions even out.
