I did a little shopping today. It seems like even steel drops 5" - 6" in diameter on eBay are going to be $200 - $300 delivered. It doesn't really need to be solid, just strong enough not to deflect, and stable (wider than it is tall or at least a low CG).
I'm thinking thick (0.25") wall 6" x 6" tubing with a thick-walled round tube tacked in the middle should be plenty strong, less than $200 in materials and shipping, and give the feet something solid to register in (the thick-walled round tube).
I also like Pontiac's idea which would be ~$100 when I'm done, but then I'll be relying on the 3/4" or 1" poly mount bolts to act as "legs".
I sketched it up, but not sure how clear it will be. The feet slide into the lathe's adjustment bolts which are hollow. The feet will have cones on the bottom to register in the thick-walled round tube (blue arrow-looking thing on the right). The square tube will be machined flat on the bottom and rest on tar paper.
Thoughts?
