It is/was common practice for manufacturers to use a filler, (bondo etc) to make castings smooth prior to painting as well.

ROBERT---here is a link to ''hobby -machinists'' which i posted . there are pictures of my recon. of bridgeport mill . it shows what can be done with ''glazing puttys'' and low end auto paints and a lot of elbow grease. if you need more info just ask. thanks re steve
