Did tony just tell me to stay out of this conversation? :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Re: Lathe Nomenclature
Fair questions. Let's widen this discussion and toss in turret lathes and vertical lathes while we're at it. And speed lathes and chuckers. Let's keep this limited to manual machines though. CNC doesn't really fit this question. "

Actually I really never gave this any thought, but I think these were labled as a sign of the times. Out of my
three lathes all have the same funtions, all will cut threads but are labeled different. One a toolroom, one
a precision, and one an engine lathe. Now my engine lathe was powered by overhead line shafts driven by an
engine elect., probably a make and break gas engine. (of course its now 220 single phase) my brochure
shows it. Being 100 yrs old it performs just as well as the other two only its five times larger. I dont know its
just my thoughts. Like many not showing their age, myself till this day when we work on ,say, a truck , I still
say "step on the starter". Now my kids dont say that, cause they didnt come from then. And then, any lathe
with flat belts even late SBs my father called them engine lathes because thats were he came from. Gap beds
to me are just an accesory or attachment. Now and then I wish I had one.

Here is my heavy 20" engine lathe -- can you picture all those belts spinnin over your head powerd by a great big GE dc motor?

When I was younger, I spent several years setting up and repairing multi spindle screw machines; but some people would call them lathes.

We had up to 8 spindles cutting at every indexing, and plenty of flood coolant, keeping all the tools running.

Very good learning experience, and I loved them.

As a trainee, I was flabbergasted how any machine could have that many tools cutting all at once.

My goal was to be the best at everything metal, so I gave them up for Tool and Die/Millwright/Weldor, etc.

There may still be some that call them lathes.
