Lathe faceplate clamps

Coming from someone with two mills and one lathe; Another lathe would be handy...

I recently made some simple clamps to use on my milling machine vise. I'm sure that something similar could be used on a face plate. Photo attached.

This one was just a little out of balance. Turned it slow so didn't notice any bounce. lol

I feel like Im either a bad machinist, or that I need to buy a mill too. There are so many things I want to make, but I always need something special for the lathe and it might be hard on it, or I just need a mill.
The challenging part of the clamps is that slot. A mill is so nice for cutting that slot. I don't have a vertical mill, but I do have a blacksmith's shop. The slot can be cut with a slot punch (hot).

Is there a setup for clamps I could turn without a mill?
I should probably start a new thread, but I’m questioning wether I should buy a precision Mathews mill, or not when I can afford it.
