I'm in my mid 50s. No one sent me the memo. I starined my knee last year by repeatedly sitting cross legged the wrong way. One knee was affected. This must have gone on for months before it became a problem. Then I stepped off a bus the wrong way (didn't realize it at the time), and practically sprinted home 3/4 of a mile (well not really). At almost 2am. After an 18 hour day running around. And now I drive a car that's too small for me (I will alter the thing before long).

So. My knee is always achey some 9 months after being house bound for a week. I could swear I'm aggravating it the most in my sleep. What to do? Is the only real remedy to stay off of it and keeping it elevated for days or a week?

If your into more of the alternative stuff, some of these may help. Arnica, Arnica rub, Glucosamine Sulfate.

Before I had my knees replaced Ibuprofen helped a lot also. My knees were bad, I took everthing. For general use not walking on hills or doing squats the alternative worked. At work most days, I had to use the Western medicine stuff, the alternative just wasn't strong enough.

That being said, when I had my knees replaced (one at a time) I used Oxycoden to manage the pain. My wife in the other hand took one Ibuprofen every few hours to control the pain. I think it has something to do with your pain threshold. Mine apparently is not very high.

It's not that they're that bad, or I'm in horrible pain. And believe you me I have 0 toleranve for pain. But I want to start walking, bicycling. When I tried bicycling again, my knee swelled up some. It looks somewhat swollen now all the time.

I suppose this isn't a horrible injury, but tje damned thing just wom't heal up. In my mid 30s I couldn't squat down to look at items on the lowest shelf. It was a monster getting up (I also am 70+ lbs. overweight). As I was approaching 50, I started doing long walks. I mean long. 3 - 4 hours. Not that often even. My knees were indestructible. Not sure if I'll ever be able to walk like that again. But I need to exercise. And this inhibits me.

When I tore up my knee from a 20 foot column falling , I found Diciofenac Sodium Topical Gel was a wonder drug. It is over the counter. Also know as arthritis pain reliever. It is a gel or cream that is rubbed on the sore part of the knee. Was good at relieving pain and reducing swelling. Worked great for me. Hang in there. Hope you can find something that works for you.

Then there's the arthritis in my hands and wrists ...

Again not severe curremtly. Got to start working those joints. And taking the msm/chondro/gluco.

At age 39 I spent a couple of hours digging a hole at the beach with my 2 year old son. I sat on my knees with my butt on my heels.
Next day knee was swollen and painful. I ignored it for 10 years. Finally went to the doc. Diagnosis, torn meniscus.
Surgery, after a couple months of recovery, I was back doing things. Been 17 years and still no issues, occasion burn or twinge as I warm up before exercise. Get it checked out.

Get this book: https://www.amazon.com/Knee-Ability-Zero-Ben-Patrick/dp/B09KNGDYGL
The author has turned it into some huge program you can 'subscribe' to, but everything you need to get your knees back in shape is in the book. You can find videos about him on YouTube - search "knees over toes guy".

Also, I've found that the biggest problem is that once injured, knees take a long time to recover - probably because it's hard to refrain from using them.

Good luck!

Get your doc to check it out- maybe an x-ray and/or an ultrasound
