Jacobs 33 Male Taper Repair

Have you seen the Chinese steel rulers lately? They are perfectly flat (I'm sure they are ground) and they can be used as makeshift surface references (specially for cylindrical grindings, which are linear).

Just buy one of those rulers and place it in a vise bolted to the table. Make a bracket that slides on the side of the ruler and fiddle with an indicator until you find the average on the existing taper, to set it to the proper angle. Then replace the indicator with a dremel. You should be able to grind back the original taper by turning the spindle on and sliding the dremel back and forth along the side of the ruler. If your drill press has a screw style depth stop, you can use the nuts on the other side to feed the spindle very accurately.
