Issue tapping a hole

Ahhhh....so you have met Lucas, "The Prince of Darkness"!
Lucas and I became well acquainted...he cut his teeth on the MG, which was simple compared to his later endeavors, namely my 1981 DeLorean, talk about mayhem in the electrical systems!

Those inserts will work perfectly, and save me a headache.

Body on the bass is actually hollow, Paul wanted to do a scaled down version of his fullsize upright, so it looks like a small upright. I'll post some pictures of the build thus far. We've been sanding the radius on the fingerboard as of late and that is about 1/2 done, it is a lot of work but the wood he chose is beautiful, and as we radius it just keeps getting better. We were looking for tuning machines awhile back, and found they are wildly expensive (we're on a pretty tight budget) so decided to go "old school" with tuning pegs....problem was, no one has used tuning pegs on an upright/classical bass for a century. So I did some wood turning in the Atlas and made some tapered tuning pegs for him, next was a reamer to do the peg holes....unbelievable what those things cost! So I turned a tapered "D" reamer for him to do those. It has been a fun project, and a real learning experience for both of us. Next he wants to do an ultra modern style electric upright...he wants it Carbon Fiber wrapped....of course.

Oh well...the lathe just sat there till he started this project, and I've been meaning to fire it up and put it back in shape anyhow. Now that the AG in Michigan has rendered an opinion making sound suppressors legal, I think I will submit a Form 1 and build a .22 suppressor later in the year. So many projects.....so little "free" time.

Work really cramps my style y'know? Guess I will buy a Lottery ticket tonight and see if lady luck will grant me a pass.

I didn't realize Lucas was involved with the DeLorean. No wonder it failed!

A carbon fiber bass would be cool. I saw a segment of How It's Made a while back and they were building a traditional string bass entirely out of carbon fiber. You need to seriously post some pics of your bass project. I have always wanted to build a stringed instrument and definitely will at some point. Both of my boys are accomplished string players but ufortunately they didn't get it from me.

So, suppressors are legal here now? That really hard to believe in Michigan. I'm putting together an AR15 carbine and a suppressor would be a lot of fun. I just finished jumping through the bureaucratic hoops for my CPL, so I guess a bit more paper work won't be that big a deal.

We definitely have to get together for a cup of coffee or a beer. My son is also a musician, winds and strings (Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Tenor Sax, Bass Guitar, Upright Bass) and builds conventional electric Bass' for sale.

I built my AR several years ago (not a full build from a forging or 80% receiver, I just sourced all the parts and put it together), and before that a MAC 11/9mm semi-auto from a kit, that was a fun build, though I don't shoot it often anymore. I'm planning to buy a Sterling SMG parts kit next month and do a semi-auto conversion build later this summer. I was thinking based on the success of my .22 Long Rifle suppressor I would like to build one for the AR, which is a little more involved due to the pressures of the .223 round. You cannot shoot it (safely) without hearing protection, and muffs or plugs are a pain when coyote hunting, or just plain shooting for the sake of it.

That reminds me....coyote hunting this weekend up in Gaylord with my hunting buddies...better dust off the AR (and maybe my SKS too!)

Hmmm, coyote hunting. We may have to consider that since I don't think there are any more deer in the U.P. :( Too bad I can't shoot them in Farmington. I see them all the time while I'm out running.

Good luck this weekend.

Jim,

Will keep my ear to the ground on the radiator and shell. Do you need the entire shell with slats? Chromed slats or painted? Cap? What year is your TD?

It is a shame a while ago Irwin got bought out and they have moved production out of the states. You can still find some of thier stuff on the shelves made in USA but they will be restocked with a different origin product, same as Nicholson files.
