Indexable insert for S.S. and Titanium?

I have done fine finishing in 316 SS using CCGX and CCGT ground inserts for non-ferrous alloys. I don't think it is the ideal application for the insert, and the tool life is subpar, but it leaves a wonderful finish and allows me to take finish passes as small as .0005". Any -GX or -GT insert will have a polished top and a razor sharp ground edge.

PS: These inserts are amazing for aluminum and brass if you haven't tried them.

abom79 has vid on CNMG inserts, Naverone will look at your att. ;later

Yep, even on 55-58 HRC 440C stainless those inserts will take very light finish cuts like that. I hardly ever admit that, because it is not documented to work for this application, but I've been doing it successfully for years.

I will only use ground periphery for finishing, and it drives insert salesmen crazy because their engineers tell them I am wrong.

eh, maybe ... but it works well enough to give me confidence to repeat it over and over again.
