You can go either way. I sharpen mine 135° and do as much of a split point as the drill dr allows. It's not a great split point, but it's better than none.
I had similar results with my attempts at split points. What came as more of a surprise though was that when I tried to sharpen the same bit again I discovered that the split pointing operation had removed so much of the flute that the spring-loaded jaws on the DD would no longer register the bit properly.
There’s a definite learning curve to using the machine though, and I readily confess I’ve not spent a great deal of time on mine even though I’ve had it for about six or seven years already.
